I have a 71yo friend....
We originally met online via Sentinel fandom over 15 years ago, and have emailed each other regularly since then. We've even visited each other's homes, which are a thousand miles apart.
This friend is of a solid conservative ilk. She's very set in her opinions about how people should behave in certain situations, about what's right and what's wrong, and what's just plain weird.
So, imagine my shock when, in her last email, she pointed out that her state was legalizing personal use of marijuana as of next year and... she was eager to try it! Floored me. And tickled me no end.
I myself have no interest in taking any drugs, beyond Tylenol once every few years, such as for a toothache. Being one who tends to take things literally, I believed all that stuff as a child about how drugs are bad for you. Then I saw with my own eyes how disgusting regular use of drugs were when my father, who was an M.D., staggered around the house completely out of his mind, doped up on an endless cycle of downers and uppers.
Yet, while I never had any interest or need, I was for the legalization of all drugs early on, because whenever society says "no" to something, people just do it illegally, creating a black market and a judicial system swamped with prosecuting people who are just doing what everyone else does, anyway. Plus, I didn't question that marijuana in particular was relatively harmless, if not outright helpful.
So, when I write my friend back, it'll be with a great big thumbs-up. I actually doubt she'll get much benefit from it, but the thought of her, at her age, wanting to do something that has been officially forbidden for so long just makes me giggle.
