You Go Girl!

Updated: Feb 20, 2020

How many actresses have the balls to take a selfie without any makeup?

Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, from two years ago.

The Dutton family is without its matriarch, which has caused considerable personal problems for various characters, and said matriarch especially left her mark on daughter Beth.

As a teeneager, when Beth is distressed at starting her period, her mother, in a gentle, sweet tone, tells her:

All those boys you used to outrun and out-wrestle, that's all done.

And they're gonna look at you different. See you different.

And then they're gonna look at you like you're less. Like you're somehow weaker today than you were yesterday. You're not, though.

You're stronger than all of them.

Because if men were responsible for giving birth, the human race wouldn't have lasted two generations.

But after being treated like you're weaker long enough, you'll start to believe it too.

It's why I'm gonna have to be hard on you, honey.

I have to turn you into the man most men will never be.

The last line is a real kicker. Whatever one thinks of the wisdom, or lack thereof, of the words, Mrs. Dutton was certainly successful at accomplishing it in the time before she was killed in a riding accident, which her dying words blamed Beth for.

Even Beth's father sometimes uses masculine references. When he's angry with her, he tells her, "You're the only child I have tough enough to take this advice: You need to man up." It's worth noting that one of Beth's brothers is a Navy Seal. Yet, as the only girl, Beth is considered the toughest of the children.

According to creator/producer/writer/director Taylor Sheridan, "The toughest person on the show is Beth. There’s no question of that." And, "Writing for Kelly as Beth is maybe the favorite character I’ve ever written for. I never have any idea what she’s going to say. She’s a blast.... With a character who just simply doesn’t care about the consequences or the reaction to her words, she just refuses to be weak. That cavalier, she’s the freest character I’ve ever written. She will do or say whatever the hell she wants. It allows you to put her in some fascinating situations."

Season Three is a wrap but won't air until June. That's a long time to anticipate seeing more of those "fascinating situations".
