I couldn't have said it better than this:
In so many of my stories, even those written decades ago, I can point to something from my own life that gave me inspiration for a particular thought, action, or scene. Some of those recollections are things I've actually experienced, some are things I've heard others relay of their experiences, and some are things that I imagine what it would be like if I directly experienced it.
In all cases they're funneled through my particular lense, and that's what makes each piece of writing unique.
