Sometimes It Takes So Little...

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

to make someone's day.

I took my 14yo beagle, Sammie, to the veterinarian for a routine vaccination and annual checkup. After the tech did the preliminary interview, we were waiting quite a long time before the vet walked in.

After apologizing for the wait, the vet said, "It's so nice to see a healthy dog. We're having a rough morning." In the ensuing conversation, he described that they were dealing with two large mastiffs that had gotten into their owner's prescription bottle and, between the two of them, swallowed 100 pills. They were being treated with lots of IVs to try to flush out their systems. Then he mentioned another dog that had been brought in with a severe eye injury, and had to be sent on to a specialist.

Sammie was his usual friendly, eager self, jumping up to say hello and get treats. The vet gushed over how rare it was to see a beagle with such ideal weight (another doctor there has told me Sammie is their favorite beagle patient, for that reason alone), and how Sammie exuded good health, despite his age. There was just some mild concern about tarter build-up on one of his teeth.

As we were leaving, the vet looked me in the eye and said, "Thank you so much. It's so great seeing such a healthy dog, especially at his age." As though I'd brought Sammie in just to please the staff. It told of how traumatizing the morning had been.

And how easy it was to provide some relief from that trauma.
